favourite summer memories:

morning dips at the beach, barbecues on the terrace, iced water, fresh fruits to-go, sunscreen, new cities, evening flirts, dry nail polish

favourite autumn memories:

chai lattes, mugs with puns, a reading list, lip liner, 100% cotton and wool, big bags, unscented candles, cosy armchairs

Given the five consecutive days of rain in Copenhagen, I can confidently declare that autumn has made its grand entrance for the season. While many in the city and all over mourn their last beach days, beers on terrace and sunlit rooms, others whole heartedly embrace the change in the air.

It seems that there are two dividing camps that always emerge in full force in this transitional period: those who refer to September as their version of the new year, and those who scan their weather app for the last sunny day to soak up.

If you are the later, and need some comforting, then please refer to this short list for any and all inspiration on how to embrace autumn.

Make an autumnal playlist.

Summer is all about listening to music with the car windows rolled down, so create a playlist for the morning commutes instead. Mine: “witching hours,” consisting of the very best of Kate Bush, Patti Smith, Florence + The Machine and others. Listen to “Dancing Barefoot” by Patti Smith and thank me later.

Read a novel about someone leaving their hometown.

As summer is largely characterised by travelling to new places, discover new horizons through literature. Find your own version of Kerouac’s

On The Road

. You could always start small with Frank O’Hara’s

Lunch Poems

.

Reorganise your closet.

There’s nothing worse than opening up your closet to be greeted by all your summer tops and dresses when the weather is nowhere close to accommodating them. Stop punishing yourself and make sure your closet is organised in a way that embraces the new season.

Find a new drink rotation.

Aperols and ice teas may be entirely the rage in the warmer weather, but autumn is where I believe most seasonal drinks have become popularised, and rightfully so. A chai, a hot chocolate with marshmallows, a cold brew, a warm matcha, a spiced latte... You’d have enough for a weekly tasting menu! Perhaps you could discover a new favourite cafe?

Switch from festivals to exhibitions.

Embrace the quiet observations and research what the museums and galleries of your cities are displaying these next few months. Flip through other people’s curriculum and see what interests you. Stay curious.

Organise a nostalgia marathon.

We all have a certain show or movie that we’ve grown up revisiting every year. Mine may allegedly be Twilight… Embrace it! I know I’ll be watching my three favourite nostalgia movies soon: Wild Child, Burlesque and Crossroads. Nothing like a proper rainy day to make yourself comfortable.

And lastly, remember what you did your previous autumns. Repeat what you loved and throw away what you didn’t. There is no better source of inspiration than yourself. With that, I leave you my autumn reminders from

:

AUTUMN REMINDERS

don’t track your reading goal. read for pleasure, not purpose.

breathe in the cold air whenever you have access to it. enjoy its taste.

embrace change. nothing of worth ever lasts.

allow yourself seconds. eat when you are full and take a break when needed.

revisit old projects. hang your frames collecting dust. pick up your old hobby.

support your community. get a library card. buy bread directly from the bakery.

take time for others. no matter how busy it gets. call family. drop in on friends.

Love,

Anastasia
