Cassandra Unchained Charity of the Month

is

Siloam Health

, a non-profit,

donor-supported

medical clinic that primarily serves the uninsured, working poor and newly arrived immigrants and refugees who do not quality for traditional government assistance.

I have personally vetted this charity, and I know it well.

Siloam relies largely on donations to run their operation.

Patients pay only what they can afford and are accepted after a careful screening process.

The Problem

Tennessee did not buy into the Obamacare Medicaid program back when it was introduced and so remains one of 10 states that have continuously refused to implement full Affordable Care Act (ACA) Medicaid expansion.

TennCare does exist, but eligibility is very tightly restricted.

Working people earning very low wages with no health care do not qualify for TennCare, generally speaking.

As a result, Tennessee’s medical needs for the poor working and new immigrant needy, including their families, are very much unmet.

In Nashville, nearly 100,000 people live without health insurance.

The Solution

Each year, Siloam Health cares for about 6,000 marginalized patients across 20,000 encounters, now through two clinics.

Siloam operates and looks like a traditional doctor’s office. Prospective patients are screened for eligibility on a weekly basis, and contribute to their own care based on their ability to pay.

Siloam is incredibly efficient with every

donated dollar

, relying on donated pharmaceuticals and medical equipment too, and the patient’s own means.

Health care is not cheap, but Siloam has been finding ways to get it done for 30 years.

Community Health & Student Education

Siloam deploys Siloam-trained Community Health Workers (CHWs) to serve as health ambassadors in immigrant and refugee communities.

CHWs develop one-on-one relationships with those in need, and have helped more than 550 patients in these communities improve their health.

Through a Preceptorship program, Siloam also introduces medical students, physician assistants, nurse practitioners and medical and pharmacy students to navigating the health care provision scene with limited resources.

This is a needed skill, becoming more and more important.
